The Project

RK&K designed a 3.9-mile shared-use trail through Anacostia Park in Washington DC, integrating sophisticated engineering with environmental sensitivity. The Anacostia Riverwalk Trail’s innovative design features a blend of on-street cycle tracks, shared-use pathways, four prefabricated steel truss bridges, and 1,200 linear feet of reinforced concrete boardwalk.

The project exemplified meticulous environmental stewardship. Following a comprehensive topographical survey, RK&K’s team carefully routed the trail to preserve the park’s ecological integrity. By navigating around wetlands, waterways, and mature forest habitats, the design minimizes environmental disruption while creating an engaging riverside experience. A comprehensive tree inventory of over 2,300 trees was conducted in collaboration with the National Park Service, and environmental permits were secured from multiple Maryland, DC, and federal agencies.

RK&K’s comprehensive services encompassed project management, technical surveysutility coordination, environmental assessments, archaeological investigations, geotechnical analysis, and intricate design elements—including trail layout, roadway improvements, a boardwalk, pedestrian bridges, wayfinding, drainage solutions, maintenance of traffic and lighting.

“I’m proud of the way our team collaborated across disciplines to provide environmentally sensitive and cost-effective design solutions that fit within the landscape context of the corridor.”
