The Project
Partnering with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, RK&K served as Lead Designer for the widening of a portion of US 17 Business/NC 37 and the replacement of the historic “S” Bridge swing span and causeway over the Perquimans River. The new bridge mirrors the look of the original bridge that was built in 1929 as it spans the navigational channel, while continuing to provide a direct and reliable route between the Towns of Hertford and Winfall.
The two-lane US 17 Business/NC 37 facility north of the new bridge was designed to meet a 50-mph design speed for a rural collector. The remaining portion, including the bridge, was designed to meet a 30-mph design speed for an urban collector. The new 2,691-foot-long, 29-span structure included the swing span section over the navigational channel and adjacent earthen causeway. In addition to maintaining a 5’-6” sidewalk, several aesthetic features include Oregon Rails, decorative lighting along the bridge, and two observation platforms. Beyond roadway and structural design, RK&K provided the design for the bridge tender’s house.
