The Project

RK&K served as Lead Designer for this 16.7-mile, high-profile design-build, divided facility on new location from existing US 64 west of Asheboro to US 64 east of Asheboro, including a two-mile, two-lane connector to the Zoo to the existing NC 159/Zoo Entrance. With more than 800,000 guests visiting North Carolina’s most popular tourist attraction each year, the North Carolina Zoo and US 64 corridor around Asheboro has experienced extremely heavy traffic. As one of the states most visited destinations, the Zoo serves as a substantial economic engine for this region of the state.

Facing an array of design challenges as the project traversed around Asheboro, RK&K’s multi-discipline engineers implemented innovative designs to mitigate the challenging terrain, utility relocations, right-of-way, service roads, archaeological sites, and an aggressive schedule.

RK&K provided multi-discipline design and oversight for the Asheboro Bypass project, which included six interchanges, 23 new bridges, 12 culverts and a 1,600-foot-long sound barrier. Serving more than functionality, RK&K’s “Gateway Design” now serves as a welcoming gateway to the nation’s largest natural habitat zoo. In addition to multi-discipline design services, RK&K coordinated bridge and landscape design aesthetics to highlight the Zoo and incorporate an “open air” look.
